Workflows

In the context of software, a workflow describes the structured sequence of activities (manual or automated), states, and transitions that transform defined inputs into outputs to achieve a specific outcome. It depicts dependencies, describes how work items move, who or what acts on them, and under what rules they progress to the next step. For example, workflows in software development typically span phases like requirement analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance, and may be repeated many times during a project. Workflows provide a common, repeatable process which can potentially be automated to enhance speed and reduce costs.
