Specialized Emulators (e.g. STIM, QRyd)

In high-performance computing, “specialized emulators” are emulation tools or platforms that are tailored to reproduce the behavior of a specific type of hardware component, system architecture, or workload pattern rather than an entire general-purpose processor or node. In quantum computing software development, “specialized emulators” are emulation tools that focus on reproducing the behavior of a particular class of quantum systems, hardware platforms, or algorithm types, rather than emulating a fully general, universal quantum computer. They are optimized for specific use cases—such as certain gate sets, noise models, or physical architectures—to study, test, or tune those targeted scenarios with higher accuracy or efficiency than a general-purpose emulator.
