Color codes

Color codes are topolo­gi­cal quantum error-correc­ting codes that encode logical qubits into a 2D lattice whose faces can be three-colored, enabling protec­tion against local noise via stabi­li­zer measu­re­ments. They are widely studied as an alter­na­tive to surface codes because they can offer more gate-friendly fault-tolerant logic at the code level, though practi­cal perfor­mance depends stron­gly on decoding and hardware constraints. Compared with surface codes, color codes are often highligh­ted for support­ing trans­ver­sal imple­men­ta­ti­ons of important logical gate sets, which can simplify parts of fault-tolerant gate synthe­sis. When paired with advan­ced decoding strate­gies color code schemes can approach surface code performance.
