Color codes
Color codes are topological quantum error-correcting codes that encode logical qubits into a 2D lattice whose faces can be three-colored, enabling protection against local noise via stabilizer measurements. They are widely studied as an alternative to surface codes because they can offer more gate-friendly fault-tolerant logic at the code level, though practical performance depends strongly on decoding and hardware constraints. Compared with surface codes, color codes are often highlighted for supporting transversal implementations of important logical gate sets, which can simplify parts of fault-tolerant gate synthesis. When paired with advanced decoding strategies color code schemes can approach surface code performance.
