Lattice Surgery
Lattice surgery is a method for performing logical gates between qubits encoded in topological quantum error-correcting codes, most notably the surface code, by merging and splitting code patches along their boundaries instead of using direct transversal gates or braiding. In practice, each logical qubit is stored on its own patch of the lattice, and operations like CNOT are implemented via sequences of joint boundary measurements that temporarily fuse two patches into a larger code and then separate them again, all while maintaining local stabilizer measurements and active error correction; this approach preserves 2D nearest-neighbour connectivity and significantly reduces overhead for scalable fault-tolerant architectures.
