Research and Innova­tion Center for Applied Quantum AI

The Research and Innova­tion Center for Applied Quantum AI of Fraunhofer HNFIZ conducts research on the inter­sec­tion of quantum compu­ting and artifi­cial intel­li­gence. The focus is on questi­ons related to quantum machine learning: How can AI improve quantum compu­ters? How can quantum compu­ters support AI appli­ca­ti­ons? And what poten­tial arises from combi­ning these two techno­lo­gies? The research is comple­men­ted by the develo­p­ment of tools and trans­fer formats for businesses, as well as the estab­lish­ment of a strong quantum ecosys­tem in Heilbronn-Franken: from a regio­nal roadmap and inter­na­tio­nal colla­bo­ra­ti­ons to the networ­king of science, indus­try, and education. 

Research

  • Quantum Research: We are inves­ti­ga­ting how machine learning (ML) can improve quantum compu­ting, how quantum compu­ters can be used for ML tasks, and how classi­cal ML can benefit from quantum algorithms.
  • Knowledge Trans­fer: We develop (Q)ML-based tools and frame­works, support the integra­tion of quantum soluti­ons into corpo­rate struc­tures and proces­ses, and promote knowledge trans­fer through educa­tio­nal programs, training sessi­ons, and presentations.
  • Ecosys­tem: We develop and coordi­nate the quantum roadmap for Heilbronn-Franken, streng­then networ­king within the ecosys­tem through events, inter­na­tio­nal colla­bo­ra­tion, and scien­ti­fic partner­ships, and are actively invol­ved in joint initia­ti­ves to promote deep tech in Heilbronn.

An inter­na­tio­nal sympo­sium series on quantum machine learning and the conver­gence of quantum compu­ting and artifi­cial intel­li­gence. The event alter­na­tes between Heilbronn and Waterloo. 

ML4QT Sympo­sium Heilbronn–Waterloo

The Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI, in colla­bo­ra­tion with inter­na­tio­nal partners, organi­zes the “Machine Learning for Quantum Techno­lo­gies” (ML4QT) sympo­sium series. The event alter­na­tes between Heilbronn and Water­loo, Canada, and brings together resear­chers from the fields of quantum compu­ting, artifi­cial intel­li­gence, and quantum machine learning. The focus is on current research findings, new fields of appli­ca­tion, and streng­thening inter­na­tio­nal colla­bo­ra­tion at the inter­sec­tion of quantum and AI techno­lo­gies. In addition, selec­ted specia­li­zed sympo­sia are held in Heilbronn in the “interim years.” In July 2026, the topic was “Fault-Tolerant Quantum Compu­ting for the Natural Sciences.”

The Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken creates an open space for exchange, networ­king, and new perspec­ti­ves on quantum techno­lo­gies. As part of the imple­men­ta­tion of the Heilbronn-Franken Quantum Compu­ting Roadmap, this initia­tive brings together stake­hol­ders from acade­mia, indus­try, and civil society and streng­thens colla­bo­ra­tion within the regio­nal ecosystem. 

Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken

The Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken is an open networ­king event for anyone interes­ted in quantum techno­lo­gies who would like to actively shape their develo­p­ment. As part of the imple­men­ta­tion of the Heilbronn-Franken Quantum Compu­ting Roadmap, this initia­tive regularly brings together stake­hol­ders from research, business, start­ups, educa­tion, and the public sector to discuss current develo­p­ments, challenges, and future prospects. Through expert insights, real-world examp­les, and perso­nal inter­ac­tions, the Meetup creates oppor­tu­ni­ties for exchange, new colla­bo­ra­ti­ons, and joint projects. In this way, it helps to bring together the key players in the regio­nal quantum ecosys­tem, support the imple­men­ta­tion of the roadmap, and streng­then the visibi­lity of the Heilbronn-Franken region within the natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal quantum community.

The Quantum Compu­ting Winter School provi­des students, early-career resear­chers, and interes­ted indivi­du­als with a hands-on intro­duc­tion to the world of quantum compu­ting. In colla­bo­ra­tion with Heilbronn Univer­sity, Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI offers an inter­di­sci­pli­nary learning format that combi­nes the funda­men­tals, programming, and appli­ca­tion prospects of quantum technologies. 

Quantum Compu­ting Winter School

The Quantum Compu­ting Winter School is a joint conti­nuing educa­tion and networ­king program organi­zed by Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI and Heilbronn Univer­sity. Over the course of a multi-day program, parti­ci­pants gain in-depth insight into the funda­men­tals of quantum compu­ting, modern programming approa­ches, and current develo­p­ments and appli­ca­tion areas of the techno­logy. By combi­ning scien­ti­fic lectures, hands-on exerci­ses, and direct inter­ac­tion with experts, the Winter School provi­des an acces­si­ble entry point into a dynami­cally growing field of techno­logy. At the same time, it contri­bu­tes to building a pool of quali­fied profes­sio­nals and supports the develo­p­ment of a “quantum-infor­med workforce” in the Heilbronn-Franken region.
