Research and Innovation Center for Applied Quantum AI
The Research and Innovation Center for Applied Quantum AI of Fraunhofer HNFIZ conducts research on the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. The focus is on questions related to quantum machine learning: How can AI improve quantum computers? How can quantum computers support AI applications? And what potential arises from combining these two technologies? The research is complemented by the development of tools and transfer formats for businesses, as well as the establishment of a strong quantum ecosystem in Heilbronn-Franken: from a regional roadmap and international collaborations to the networking of science, industry, and education.
Research
- Quantum Research: We are investigating how machine learning (ML) can improve quantum computing, how quantum computers can be used for ML tasks, and how classical ML can benefit from quantum algorithms.
- Knowledge Transfer: We develop (Q)ML-based tools and frameworks, support the integration of quantum solutions into corporate structures and processes, and promote knowledge transfer through educational programs, training sessions, and presentations.
- Ecosystem: We develop and coordinate the quantum roadmap for Heilbronn-Franken, strengthen networking within the ecosystem through events, international collaboration, and scientific partnerships, and are actively involved in joint initiatives to promote deep tech in Heilbronn.
Activities
An international symposium series on quantum machine learning and the convergence of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. The event alternates between Heilbronn and Waterloo.
ML4QT Symposium Heilbronn–Waterloo
The Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI, in collaboration with international partners, organizes the “Machine Learning for Quantum Technologies” (ML4QT) symposium series. The event alternates between Heilbronn and Waterloo, Canada, and brings together researchers from the fields of quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum machine learning. The focus is on current research findings, new fields of application, and strengthening international collaboration at the intersection of quantum and AI technologies. In addition, selected specialized symposia are held in Heilbronn in the “interim years.” In July 2026, the topic was “Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing for the Natural Sciences.”

The Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken creates an open space for exchange, networking, and new perspectives on quantum technologies. As part of the implementation of the Heilbronn-Franken Quantum Computing Roadmap, this initiative brings together stakeholders from academia, industry, and civil society and strengthens collaboration within the regional ecosystem.
Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken
The Quantum Meetup Heilbronn-Franken is an open networking event for anyone interested in quantum technologies who would like to actively shape their development. As part of the implementation of the Heilbronn-Franken Quantum Computing Roadmap, this initiative regularly brings together stakeholders from research, business, startups, education, and the public sector to discuss current developments, challenges, and future prospects. Through expert insights, real-world examples, and personal interactions, the Meetup creates opportunities for exchange, new collaborations, and joint projects. In this way, it helps to bring together the key players in the regional quantum ecosystem, support the implementation of the roadmap, and strengthen the visibility of the Heilbronn-Franken region within the national and international quantum community.

The Quantum Computing Winter School provides students, early-career researchers, and interested individuals with a hands-on introduction to the world of quantum computing. In collaboration with Heilbronn University, Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI offers an interdisciplinary learning format that combines the fundamentals, programming, and application prospects of quantum technologies.
Quantum Computing Winter School
The Quantum Computing Winter School is a joint continuing education and networking program organized by Fraunhofer HNFIZ Applied Quantum AI and Heilbronn University. Over the course of a multi-day program, participants gain in-depth insight into the fundamentals of quantum computing, modern programming approaches, and current developments and application areas of the technology. By combining scientific lectures, hands-on exercises, and direct interaction with experts, the Winter School provides an accessible entry point into a dynamically growing field of technology. At the same time, it contributes to building a pool of qualified professionals and supports the development of a “quantum-informed workforce” in the Heilbronn-Franken region.
